The idea in one sentence

Use the passato prossimo for things that happened and are finished (an event, a moment). Use the imperfetto for the background: how things were, what used to happen, what was going on.

Passato prossimoImperfetto
Think"What happened?""What was it like?"
ExampleIeri ho mangiato la pizza.Da bambino mangiavo sempre la pizza.
EnglishYesterday I ate pizza. As a child I always ate pizza / used to eat pizza.

How to form the passato prossimo

It has two parts: the present of avere or essere, plus the past participle.

Most verbs take avere. Verbs of movement and change (andare, venire, arrivare, partire, nascere, diventare) and reflexive verbs take essere, and the participle agrees with the subject: Maria è andata, Marco è andato.

How to form the imperfetto

It is regular for almost every verb: take the infinitive, remove -are, -ere or -ire, and add the endings.

parlarevederedormire
ioparlavovedevodormivo
tuparlavivedevidormivi
lui/leiparlavavedevadormiva
noiparlavamovedevamodormivamo
voiparlavatevedevatedormivate
loroparlavanovedevanodormivano

Irregular ones to learn: essere (ero, eri, era, eravamo, eravate, erano), fare (facevo), dire (dicevo), bere (bevevo).

When to use which

Passato prossimo

  • A completed action: Ho comprato un libro.
  • A series of events: Mi sono alzato, ho fatto colazione e sono uscito.
  • A specific moment or a limited time: Ieri sera ho studiato due ore.

Imperfetto

  • Habits in the past: Ogni estate andavamo al mare.
  • Descriptions (people, weather, feelings): Era una bella giornata e io ero stanco.
  • An action in progress: Mentre cucinavo, ascoltavo la radio.

Using both together

The imperfetto sets the scene, and the passato prossimo is the event that interrupts it:

Mentre camminavo in centro, ho incontrato un vecchio amico.
While I was walking in the centre, I met an old friend.

Faceva freddo, quindi ho preso il cappotto.
It was cold, so I took my coat.
